CONCORD, NC : The Lead 2 Real Estate Pro Division put on a show for the fans in the stands and those who watched live on LegendsNation.tv in their round 3 race of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway Tuesday night.
After the invert, Fab Specialties driver Corey Heim and Dillon Faggart brought the dozen cars to green for 25 laps of slip-sliding racing action around the flat quarter-mile oval. Dennis Lambert teammates Carson Ferguson and Kaden Honeycutt made up the second row.
Faggart jumped out to the early lead with Honeycutt locked to his rear bumper as the groove had moved up to the top with the wet conditions.
On lap five, Honeycutt went low on Faggart off turn two and Ferguson went to the outside and made it three-wide for the lead off turn four. Ferguson got the advantage and took the lead away with Honeycutt in second and Kyle Beattie Racing’s Alex McCollum up to the third position as he showed off his rain skills.
On lap 8, Dawson Cram decided to take the Bojangles’ car threw all the Bo Barrels in turns one and two and brought out a caution for track cleanup. Cram’s night came to end in a shower of sparks on the next restart with suspension damage to the right front.
Another caution on lap 13 for scattered barrels all over turn two and down the backstrecth broke up the battle for the lead between Ferguson and Honeycutt.
Ferguson and Honeycutt picked up their fight for the lead among teammates as the green flag waved again with Alex McCollum in close contact with them.
Everything changed as Honeycutt missed turn number one and drove off into the grass on lap 19 and gave second position away to McCollum. In the shuffle to get back in line, Austin Green got under Jordan Black off turn two and slight contact between them sent the two-time defending champion Black for a slide into the grass. The caution was flown and both Green and Black were sent tail for the incident.
The drama would only build higher on the final lap as after he tried for lap and lap Honeycutt gave Ferguson an ever so slight bump to the back end in turn three, which sent Ferguson just off into the grass on exit. Honeycutt crossed the finish line first, but that was not the end of the story.
Ferguson made a dirt track save and came across the finish line with the black and checkered flags waving and lost by .001-seconds to Alex McCollum. Honeycutt was placed third after race officials deemed he pushed the 00 of Ferguson off track.
According to the unofficial “Stat Man” of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout, Jacob Seelman, this was the second closest finish in the history of the track. Only a dead heat tie in a Semi-Pro race back in 2005 between Chrissy Wallace and Jess Mattox, in which they were declared co-winners was closer.
