LUCAMA, NC – Cameron Murray is hoping to close out the 2017 season with a win in the Thanksgiving Classic.
Murray, 13, from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina competes in the Bandolero division at Southern National Motorsports Park. He enters the Thanksgiving Classic fresh off his first Southern National victory which he claimed on October 22nd when he held off a challenge from Emily Day. Now, he’s looking ahead with hopes of beating track champion Ethan Johnson to score the win.
“I think I have something for Ethan Johnson,” Murray said. “It’s the last race and we’re trying to prove something and see what we can do.”
Johnson is more than a competitor to Murray. He is a personal friend and is the reason Murray began racing last year.
“We were on a field trip together for school,” Murray commented. “He started showing me and my dad some pictures and he started getting us into racing.”
Racing has since become a passion for Murray and something he hopes to make a career out of in the future. Next year, Murray will continue racing in Bandoleros while also stepping up to run in a Legend Car part-time.
“It’s been a good year and I would like to do it again next year,” Murray remarked. “The Legend car, it’s going to be something we run a few times next year.”
Johnson will have two chances to score a victory in his Bandolero at the Thanksgiving Classic. The Bandolero division will race on Friday night and Saturday night in the 17th Thanksgiving Classic presented by Solid Rock Carriers.
Along with his win at Southern National, success at other regional tracks helped propel him to a ninth place finish in the INEX National Championship standings in the Bandolero division.
