WILLIAMSTON, SC : It was not a full moon on Friday night at the 3/8ths-mile Anderson Motor Speedway, but there was something in the air when the Legend Cars took to the speedway to begin the action for the night.
Clay Thompson qualified on the LJ Dezigns pole with a 17.089, just ahead of Justin Ashley’s 17.155 on a warm late spring evening.
The dice roll came up a one which kept the lineup the same after qualifications took place. On the start, Thompson quickly jumped to the lead as the battle was on for second place behind him.
At lap five, the front four cars of Thompson, Ashley, Karl Moberg and Gracie Trotter had put a gap on the rest of the field as they raced close and hard for the lead. The next lap saw Moberg move by Ashley for second and he began to challenge leader Thompson for the next several laps.
Just past halfway, Ashley retook the second position from Moberg, but behind him the havoc began in turn one as Mitchell Hedstrom was tagged from behind and sent for a harmless spin to bring out the first caution flag, of what will be several over the final five laps.
The restart brought about a couple green flag laps before a spin in turn two that involved Dwayne Rumsey brought out the yellow flag for second time in the scheduled 20 lap feature.
On the restart, race leader Thompson’s car suddenly jumped sideways then went around in turn two to bring out the caution again. After the Farbo Motorsports crew looked over the car when it was brought in on the wrecker, it was determined that a broken trailing arm bolt is what ended the Bowersville, Georgia’s dream of finally taking a win at a track that has given him bad luck.
Another short green flag run ended after Jordan, Moberg and Ashley all got together off turn four on lap 17, which send Jordan for a spin in front of the field. Several other cars scrambled to miss being involved, but the night was over for Janson Marchbanks after he got right front damage on his car, while everyone else rejoined the race.
The green flag waved again to restart the race, but the field would not make it back around to complete the lap. Jordan, trying to get back to the front, made a move three wide under Rumsey down the backstretch, but contact when Rumsey came down across the front of Jordan’s car sent those two up the track and collected Sal Jimenez. Jordan pitted for a new right front tire as Jimenez’s car was hauled off on the back of the wrecker.
One final restart and it was Moberg, Ashley. Hedstrom and Trotter running side by side for the win over the final two laps. Moberg was able to clear Ashley and Hedstrom and was in the lead as an accident involving Scott Wessel and John Creasy took place in turn three to bring out the yellow and checkered flags to end the race. Wessel’s car took a hard front end hit to the outside wall, but he was okay.
Karl Moberg took the overall and Masters feature win for Farbo Motorsport, while Justin Ashley was the highest finisher in Pros, and third place Mitchell Hedstrom captured his first career Semi-Pro win in just over a year of racing Legend Cars.
When asked about what happened during those restarts, Karl Moberg had these commints, “At Anderson when a caution comes out the people in the back are going to make their opportunity to come to the front and they just started shoving.”
On how he was able to hold off the field in the closing laps, Moberg was quick to point out his spotter, “Good spotter. [Ryan] Farbo was on the horn with me to keep the old man calm with the good piece that we had”
