SUN PRAIRIE, WI : Sunday afternoon at Angell Park Speedway was anything but a walk in the park for Cody Apfelbeck as the Wisconsin Dirt Legends made their first appearance of the year at the 1/3rd- mile track.
During his heat race, Apfelbeck was clipped by the car of Eric Blumer just before the flagstand after Blumer’s car was sent out of control by the leader Ed Farrington after he spun in front of the field off turn four. The contact sent Apfelbeck’s car into a wild tumble before it landed on its wheels. Apfelbeck exited the car okay and the crew immediately went to work to put the car back together for the feature race later in the evening.
Apfelbeck started last in the 15-car field for the 20 lap feature race and began to work his way towards the front. Pole sitter Warren Ropp led the early laps of the race as he and fourth place starter Vince Bartolotta gapped the remainder of the field.
By lap 5, Apfelbeck had worked his way into the top ten as the battle for third place intensified behind the lead duo. Dominick Troyan was under fire from Mike Mueller for the third position as Ropp’s lead was being closed up by Bartolotta.
On lap 8, Ryan Mech and Apfelbeck took to the outside of Mueller and Troyan and the four cars were side by side before Mech took away third.
At the halfway point, Apfelbeck moved by Mueller for third and then the front four cars put on a show for the lead. Ropp and Bartolotta ran the inside as Mech and Apfelbeck took to the high line.
Lap 13 saw Apfelbeck not only move into second place, but take the race lead off turn four from Mech before they crossed the line.
The remainder of the feature saw a great battle for second place between Mech and Ropp as Apfelbeck took the checkered flag unchallenged over the final five circuits. Mech held on for second with Ropp across the line in third in the 20 lap all green flag feature race.
