TUCSON, AZ : As the season winds down at Tucson Speedway, the points battle is heating up. With just eight points separating the top two in the Bandoleros and 15 in the Legends, the title will not be decided until the final race of the season, on Oct. 13.
The Bandolero division, with drivers ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old, was the first to hit the track with quick qualifier Landen Mros leading the way. Mros spun as he exited turn four on lap three to bring out the caution.
Keirstin Jones took the lead on the restart. As she fought for the lead out of turn two, Anika O’Brien and Jones drove into the the dirt which allowed Mros to regain the lead on the high side. It was short-lived as on lap six Mros again lost control out of four and collected Jones in his spin, which sent him hard into the frontstretch wall.
Fire and safety crew quickly made their way to the scene to check on the 8-year-old driver. Though shaken by the impact, Mros’ safety gear did it’s job and the young driver was able to walk off the track with his father and grandfathers. His car was towed back to the pits with major damage.
The race resumed with O’Brien in the lead. O’Brien held off Jones for back to back wins to open her points lead to eight with just one race left in the Bandolero division.
