INVERNESS, FL : Rafe Slate is back at the INEX Winter Nationals in 2019, hoping to score some victories in the Pro Class throughout the week at Citrus County Speedway.
The Eaton, Georgia driver competed in the Winter Nationals last season but admittedly did not run as well as he had hoped. This season, teamed up with Doug Stevens, he’s hoping for a better performance.
“I came out here last year and ran not quite as well as I wanted to,” Slate told LegendsNation. “I ran fourth the last day which was pretty good. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up on that, get a few podiums and hopefully win a race.”
Slate won seven races in Legends competition last year and has around 25 career wins. Last season, he traveled all over the country, including places like Atlanta Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He plans to travel again this season while also running in a Pro Late Model with Stevens.
“Doug Stevens called and asked me if I wanted to run his car down here because he was going to run his FZ car and wanted me to run his 1250 car,” Slate explained. “We’ve been with Doug with, this will be my third year with him. We’ve been with him for a while. He’s doing my Late Model so it’s a good chance to work together and see how we need to communicate.”
Slate got into racing at a young age when he was watching NASCAR racing on TV with his grandmother.
“My grandma, she was a huge NASCAR fan when I was really young,” Slate remarked. “I saw her watching it and thought it was the coolest thing.”
Away from the track, Slate says he’s involved with his church, plays guitar as a hobby, races some on Sim Racing games, and runs Solid Rock Performance – a racing parts and graphics company in Georgia.
Slate will race in the Pro class of the Winter Nationals. Feature racing will get underway on Monday afternoon around 12pm EST. LegendsNation TV will have live coverage of the races.
