WILLIAMSTON, SC : On the first spring Friday night of the new year, 14 USLCI Legend Cars lined up for the season opener at Anderson Motor Speedway.
Defending track champion Lee Jordan qualified on pole with the new Yamaha FZ09 at a time of 17.065 seconds, which was a tenth ahead of teammate Austin MacDonald’s 17.164.
Jordan led the field into the first turn as the green flag waved to begin the feature. MacDonald was quickly shuffled back to fourth behind Randy Gunton and Karl Moberg. Those three put three brand new FZ09’s up in front over the first few circuits.
As Jordan and Gunton broke away from the battle for third, Janson Marchbanks started to make some noise in the top five. On lap 7, Marchbanks did a two-for-one as he got by both MacDonald and his Farbo Motorsports teammate Moberg to take away third.
The race appeared to be settled into a green flag run until Jessie Thomas brought out the yellow on lap 10 after contact damaged the left front suspension.
Jordan and Gunton brought the field off turn four at a slow pace for the restart, which caused Jordan to get a bad restart. As he attempted to even the battle with Gunton in turn one, he drove in too deep and the two drivers made contact. Both were able to save the cars, but the caution quickly waved.
Marchbanks now inherited the lead as the field lined back up with 10 laps to go.
The next restart, several drivers were sent around in turn three with Jordan’s car being hit from behind. The collision caused enough rear end damage to end his night.
Over the final half of the race there would be several more incidents before a three lap shootout was setup to decide the season opener.
MacDonald took the lead from Marchbanks just prior to the final yellow on lap 17. Gunton made a run around Marchbanks to take away second as the field took the white flag.
Gunton tried one last move to close the gap on MacDonald for the win, but ended up the track and allowed Marchbanks to beat him to the line for second at the checkered flag.
However, Austin MacDonald returned to the seat of his #27 Joe Ryan Osborne prepared Legend Car to take his first win of the 2019 season.
