PELETIER, NC : Saturday night’s Short Track Shootout at Carteret County Speedway will feature the largest field of Legend Cars in the track’s history.
28 cars will take the green flag on Saturday – 20 advancing from qualifying and eight transferring from a B-Main feature. On Friday afternoon, 25 cars were at the track practicing with more cars expected on Saturday.
“Absolutely we want to avoid the heat race,” Virginia driver Spencer Saunders said. “We’ve been working on short run speed to try and get locked in the top-20. A top-five, top-10 finish would be a good day. We’re looking forward to racing tomorrow.”
The Legends division has already produced three different winners at Carteret County Speedway in 2019. Brenton Irving, Zach Miller and Jordan Lamothe have each won this season. Miller was practicing on Friday and Irving will compete on Saturday.
Dillon Spain Motorsports has brought a fleet of six cars to the track. Former Carteret County Speedway feature winners Will Bristle and Eric Courtney will be joined by Emily Day, Tucker Jones, Jason Austin and Trevor Thacker.
“We are very optimistic about our chances this weekend, but overall hope that all drivers run safely,” Spain said in a DSM press release. “All of my drivers all are coming off some extremely strong practices and each driver feels like their cars are well dialed in. This should be an awesome race for the drivers and is destine to not disappoint the spectators. We are looking for a huge turnout in cars and spectators in the stands.”
DJ Canipe, a former winner in the Southeast Legends Tour, is one of many drivers who will be racing at Carteret County Speedway for the first time on Saturday.
“It’s a nice track, just taking time to get used to it,” Canipe stated. “We’re going to try to get a top-five and just run the best we can.”
Landon Rapp, last year’s Bandolero Bandit national champion, is also making his first start at Carteret County Speedway, hoping to log laps, have a strong run and get dialed in for the Legends Asphalt Nationals in October.
“It’s a pretty cool track,” Rapp remarked. “Flat, not a lot of grip, really good driver’s track. Really hoping to qualify in the feature, get a good top-10 and a top-3 Young Lions finish. We’ve picked up a little speed. I think we have enough speed to qualify in the top 20, just have to hit our marks tomorrow.”
Saturday night’s feature race will be 35 laps. The last chance qualifier, which will set the final eight starting positions, is currently set for 15 laps.
Practice for Saturday’s Short Track Shootout will get underway at 3pm, qualifying at 5:30pm and the green flag will fly at 7pm. LegendsNation TV will have live, flag-to-flag coverage for LNTV subscribers.
