(Wyatt Philyaw was able to shake the monkey off his back and take the win Saturday night at Langley Speedway)
HAMPTON, VA : Spencer Saunders collected the Legends division pole with a lap at 18.229 seconds. Ryan Matthews would start second as he just missed the pole by seven-thousandths of a second. Connor Jones, Tyler Lester and Chris Hammett were the balance of the top five in the afternoon time trials.
The Hampton Heat Legend car feature went green with Matthews in the lead after lap one of the INEX National Qualifier feature. However, back would come the pole sitter Saunders to retake the lead in short order. Not exactly convinced that Saunders was faster, Matthews was not content with second as the battle for the lead continued.
After a couple of taps to the rear of the leader, finally a car length’s separation would be achieved by the Saunders as he locked down the front spot. Further back in the order, Connor Jones, Tyler Lester and Ryan Center had a front row seat to watch the battle in third through fifth. Just before halfway, Matthews would sneak underneath Saunders for the races third lead change, but just when you thought it was settled back comes Saunders. With a bump to the rear, Saunders would once again become the race leader.
In the closing laps, Saunders managed to get away from Matthews by two car lengths. Spencer Saunders would go on to take the victory by a margin of .359 seconds. In victory lane Saunders had these remarks on his win, “It was all about patience that race, especially early in the race, I was kinda surprised how much pressure he was putting on me. But hey, you burn your stuff up and luckily I had some left in the tank. How about that baby, we won again finally!”

In Bandolero action it was Wyatt Philyaw who would lead the field to the green flag for their 15 lap feature event. Philyaw would take the point on the start as Connor Weddell picked up a spot to second just as the race was halted by an early caution.
Philyaw would continue to lead on the restart, but the driver on the move through the field was Cody Bryant, Jr as he got to second after he began the feature from the rear.
A few laps later, the route used to get the front by Bryant, which was from the outside, was used in the same manner by Bryant to get side by side with the leader. Philyaw was able to hold him off and keep Bryant from being able to complete the pass.
At halfway, the battle for lead between the two continued when this time, Bryant tried the leader low, but couldn’t maintain the momentum to complete the pass. After another quickie caution, race leader Philyaw would once again have a mirror full of Bryant, Jr. However, a determined Wyatt Philyaw would not allow Bryant to make another move, as he drove hs number #22 to victory lane by a .079 second margin at the stripe.
“We have Just been working at this all year, got the pole and I just kept hoping and hoping. I have to thank all my sponsors, my mom and dad for helping me out with the car. So glad to finally make it back to victory lane after all year,” Phliyaw quoted.
