PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA : Willie Erasmus took the honours in Round 9 of the 2019 Liqui Moly South Africa INEX Legends Championship at Zwartkops Raceway.
The September 6-7 weekend however saw Jagger Robertson extend his lead in championship heading into the final two rounds of the season.
Saturday morning’s draw for the Race 1 grid saw Richard van Heerde claiming pole position. Gerhard Roux set the fastest time in Friday’s practice sessions and lined up next to him. Chris Hoy and Justin Robertson lined up on Row 2 ahead of Ian Upton and Jagger Robertson. The weekend also saw Dayne Angel and Jarryd Evans make their debut. Both drivers showed good form on Friday.
Race 1 was brought to a halt with just two thirds of the opening lap completed following an incident between Gerhard Roux, Hoy and Justin Robertson. Robertson however managed to get back to the pits in time to take to the spare car, but could not make it out in time to retake his position on the grid for the restart.
The restart saw Jagger Robertson and Erasmus quickly make it to the front. The pair exchanged the lead over the eight-lap race, but at the finish it was Erasmus who added another win to his tally for the season. Charl Roux made his way up through the field from tenth on the grid to round out the podium just behind the leading pair. Angel celebrated his debut with a fourth place following a good tussle with Richard van Heerde. Justin Robertson finished in sixth place after starting from pit lane and working his way through the field.
Race 2 from the inverted grid based on the morning’s draw again saw Jagger Robertson making a good start to take a comfortable lead from where he could control the race and take his first win since Round 7. Erasmus held off Roux with the duo completing the podium. Andre Larsson beat Upton to fourth place following a good tussle while Justin Robertson again finished in sixth place.
This set up a close showdown for the final race of the day. This time it was Erasmus who took his second win for the day with Jagger Robertson and Charl Roux in close pursuit. The race was cut down to eight laps following an incident involving Larsson. At this point Hoy occupied fourth place ahead of Upton and Justin Robertson.
With two wins Erasmus took the overall win for the day ahead of Jagger Robertson and Charl Roux. This trio also took the respective Professional, Semi-Professional and Masters class wins.
The penultimate round of the 2019 Liqui Moly INEX Legends Championship will be held at Red Star Raceway on October 10-11.
