SWAN LAKE, NY : With the current travel restrictions in New York, along with other race tracks in the area still closed along with other factors throughout the country under the COVID-19 pandemic, Bethel Motor Speedway has announced the cancellation of the yearly Legendstock event for 2020.
Bethel Motor Speedway will still be holding a special $1,000-to-win Legends feature race on the same Saturday, August 1st that Legendstock was scheduled to take place. While, INEX has waived all National / Regional Qualifier events for the year due to the restructured championship system for 2020, all events at BMS are INEX points event and those points are still going towards the season long track and USLCI championships.
Statement released from Bethel Motor Speedway is as follows :
2020 has been a tough year for auto racing in the nation. Some race tracks have had it a little easier than others, but the toll has still been felt by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several race tracks have yet to open for the season, within close proximity to Bethel Motor Speedway. These tracks haven’t been given the green light from their local governments until the weekend of Legendstock, July 31-August 1. For that reason, Bethel has decided to cancel one of its marquee events, Legendstock, until 2021.
General Manager George Van Arsdall, Jr. states, “It wasn’t an easy decision for any of us to make. We understand the gravity of the situation with other tracks not being able to open yet, and have to show compassion to these tracks for the longevity of the sport in general. We have been lucky to have been open since mid-June thanks to the support of our local government.”
In recent years, Legendstock has had an average of fifty entrants yearly. Participants from up and down the east coast mainly, to the west coast, and as far north as Canada. Winners such as Daniel Hemric, the only three-time winner of the event, William Byron, Jr., Joe Graf, Jr., Christian Eckes, and many more have graced Bethel, taken home the paycheck and the coveted guitar trophy.
While Legendstock may be off the table this year for competitors, the INEX Legends Asphalt National Qualifier set for that date, August 1st, is still slated, with a $1000 pay day to the winner. July 31st will become an open practice day from 2pm – 8pm for $100 a car for the entire session.
