Legends raced a National Qualifier event on Saturday, May 18, at Stockton 99 Speedway (CA), with Jeremy Doss earning the victory. Read a race recap below, posted by the track.
Starting off in the Legends B-Main, eight cars were set to battle for two transfer spots into the main event. At the front of the pack, Jarret Dickson of Redwood Valley started alongside Kelseyville’s J.K Kinney. In a similar fashion to Saturday, Kinney muscled around the leader to take the lead on lap one.
It was deja vu all over again for the Campbell Motorsports driver, as he put his number 18 Nor Cal Telecom Legend out front and never relinquished the top spot. He held a commanding lead throughout the race as the rest of the field battled for second.
On lap 5, Grass Valley native Chris Justice moved by Dickson for the second spot. Then, 2 laps later Ukiah driver Kylie Keown moved into the third spot as Dickson continued to slide back into the pack. But, the field was slowed for a yellow as the 37ab of Madera’s Jeff Dizney went for a spin.
On the ensuing restart, Kinney led Justice back to the green and began to pull away. Keown settled back into the third spot with Dickson right behind as the top two cars separated themselves from the rest of the pack.
The final 13 laps went caution free and Kinney led wire to wire to lock himself into the A-Main. Justice finished just over a second behind the leader and also grabbed a transfer spot. However, coming to the checkered flag, Dickson got into the back of Keown and sent her around off of turn four. This ended her run and she was credited with an eight place finish in the race.
Shifting to the highly anticipated INEX Legends National Qualifier Race, a total of 19 cars lined up to take to the track. Ukiah driver Cole Brown started on the inside front row with Tracy native Brenden Ruzbarksky to the outside. Row two featured Huntington Beach driver Robby Curb as well as Jeremy Doss.
On the initial start, Brown powered his JD Industries machine out to the lead while the number 12 of Liden’s Wyatt Sanson pulled to the infield with a mechanical issue. However, things came to a halt on the second lap as Deeahmee Malone and J.K Kinney got together in the middle of turns one and two.
After the quick delay, Brown led the pack back to life from the outside lane. Czub had gotten by Ruzbarsky for second on the start and tucked in behind Brown. Ruzbarsky lost another spot on the restart as Doss snuck by on the outside.
Just 5 laps later, Doss moved around Czub for the second position. The top four cars ran nose to tail from until lap 20 when Brown and Doss started to extend the gap. Czub and Ruzbarsky continued to run right together but they could not maintain the blistering pace set by the leaders.
Doss spent the next 10 laps hounding the back bumper of Brown, trying the top and the bottom to get around. But Brown kept his Northern Aggregate Legend cool under pressure and held off every attack from his JD Industries car owner.
Their battle raged on and they weaved through lap traffic until lap 36, when Stockton’s Kayci Phillips and Dannie Carpenter of Lakeport went around in turn four. Once again, Brown decided to choose the outside lane with 15 to go.
It worked to his advantage, allowing him to clear Doss on lap 37. Doss continued to stalk the rear bumper of Brown, but they raced clean and never made contact. As they approached 10 laps to go, Brown maintained a half car length lead.
However, the advantage evaporated when Phillips pounded the turn three wall. It brought out a red flag for oil cleanup and set up a late race restart between the top two. Brown picked the topside for the start and Doss lined up to his inside.
The green flag waved with 7 laps on the scoreboard. This time, Doss was able to get a good launch and the leaders went through the first two turns side by side. As they headed down the backstretch, Doss throttled down and got his number 35 Legend ahead entering turn three.
He ran the middle and slid up just in front of Brown to take the lead away. He led the final 6 laps and scored his second Legends victory at the Stockton 99 Speedway this season. The win guarantees him a spot at the 33rd annual Legend Car Asphalt Nationals at Dominion Raceway.
“I had just enough to drive it in really hard,” Doss stated, “That was my only shot and man it was just fun racing with Cole. We’ve put on a bunch of good races and this was one of the best ”
As for Brown, he had to settle for second despite leading the opening 43 laps. “He’s taught me everything I know and I know his tricks of the trade to a certain point,” said Brown, “But, I had a great race and I’m super proud of JD Industries for building us bad fast cars.”
Ruzbarsky finished in third with Fort Bragg driver Aiden Daniels getting by Czub for fourth place. Mike Doss of Upper Lake crossed the line in the fifth position. Czub lost two spots on the final restart and finished in sixth. Seventh place was awarded to Travis McCullough of Galt and eight went to Liden’s Zach Sansom. The ninth and tenth place finishers were Kai Lovell of Willits and Mikey Lovell from Ukiah.
