Tires.
The 2025 Legend Car Road Course World Finals at Dominion Raceway (VA), September 26 – 28, was plagued with reports of Hoosier tire issues. Specifically, drivers and teams reported to Legends Nation at track during the event and by calls and messages afterwards there was a huge disparity in the tires the teams were required to use during the event (tire rules for the event), which, according to some, caused a massive speed difference on track. Some drivers reported tires punching a difference of 10 points on the durometer, and lap times affected by two to three seconds on a dry track, and 10 to 15 seconds on the wet.
Many drivers and teams voiced their opinion on the Legends Nation Facebook page IN THIS POST about the issues, some saying spending the money to go to the 2025 World Finals as a waste of time due to the randomness of who had what tires.
Legends Nation sent a list of five questions regarding the tire situation on Tuesday after the event. We received answers by Scott Reinhardt, General Manager of INEX Racing Series. The question and answers are below.
LN: Did INEX check the “date codes” or inspect all tires issued prior to the event, and notice a difference?
REINHARDT: INEX did inspect the tires prior to any on track activity to verify that they were still new (with nubs) tires and had not been tampered with.
LN: Were there some old inventory tires used mixed with newer tires issued, or does INEX get one batch of tires for the Nationals event from Hoosier?
REINHARDT: For the 2025 Road Course Nationals, INEX did allow the competitors to get new tires from US Legend Cars International (& its dealer network) OR use new tires the competitor already had from a previous purchase (for example, the CMS Summer Shootout, Local races from earlier in the year, Etc.). As long as they were brand new tires with nubs when they were checked in prior to the Friday practice for the Road Course Nationals, they were allowed.
LN: Was INEX aware of an issue at the track during the event and afterwards, either noticing themselves, or communication with teams and drivers?
REINHARDT: INEX did check the tires on the cars in tech after the Main Events and all the tires in tech tested the same.
LN: What safeguards does INEX have in place for the Asphalt Nationals in Vegas to make sure all tires issued are as close to the same as possible or same batch?
REINHARDT: The tires that will be used at the 2025 Asphalt Nationals will be provided by Hoosier & issued by INEX & Hoosier Tire West at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
LN: Any changes being made in the future as to how tires are acquired, checked, and distributed for future national events to make sure of a level playing field?
REINHARDT: The tire program INEX has in place is solid and we will continue to make improvements if needed.
