Flippin’ Friday! 9/1/23 – Lance Mackey’s Horrific Wreck April 5, 2021 at Wenatchee Valley

Flippin' Friday - September 1 2023 - Lance Mackey

On April 5, 2021, Lance Mackey had one of the worst Legends car wrecks in the history of the sport. Racing at the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval in Washington, the four-time Iditarod champion from Alaska got tangled up with another car, causing his ride to flip roof first into the wall. The car stopped upside down with significant damage to it and fluids pouring out. Thankfully, while he did suffer some injuries, Mackey was able to exit the car on his own power after they righted it.

While the cancer survivor was able to walk away from this horrific wreck in 2021, doctors determined during his post-wreck hospital visit his cancer had returned. On September 7, 2022, Mackey passed away.

With permission from Doug Sheldon and Below Zero Racing, Legends Nation is featuring this “Flippin’ Friday!” in Mackey’s honor.

“There is a saying in Alaska. Superman wears Lance Mackey pajamas.”
