Legends driver Evan Swilling took us to the “Danger Zone” at Langley Speedway (VA) on October 9, 2010, at the start of the Legends Pro division feature of the Legends Nationals event, flipping his Legends car into the turn one wall hard. Swilling was taken to the hospital and eventually recovered from his injuries.
Prior to the race during driver introductions, each driver was able to announce themselves to the crowd. Swilling stated he was going to take everyone to the Danger Zone, a reference to the song of the same name by Kenny Loggins made famous in the movie, Top Gun (Langley Speedway is right next to Langley Air Force Base). It was an unfortunate premonition.
Legends Nation caught up with Swilling in 2023 for the posting of this video as part of the “Flippin’ Friday!” feature.
“I watch the video all the time and am thankful I walked away,” stated Swilling. “I had a concussion that caused my vision in my left eye to have a blind spot in it. I never gained it back, but doesn’t cause me any issues unless I close my right eye. I was out for a year or so I would say before getting back in the car.
“Getting back in the car was just like riding a bike. The crash never caused me to think twice about racing like I always did and being aggressive. That’s likely because I can’t remember the crash, so therefore I was never scared of it happening again. Other than that, I just wish I was still racing now.”
While Swilling isn’t currently racing a Legends car, he does pay attention to the sport, and Legends Nation.
“I thought I had the worst wreck in a Legends car, but some that I have seen on Legends Nation in the “Flippin’ Friday!” features are just as scary.”
