Alien Motor Speedway, a three-eighths mile clay oval located in Roswell, New Mexico, canceled all races listed on their schedule for 2024 and appears to have possibly shut down forever.
Legends were scheduled to race at the track once again in 2024, however, towards the end of 2023, the track located in a town known for ufology and alien sightings had temporarily shut down.
“The Alien Motor Speedway had to close without notice in September,” stated a website update in November, 2023. “Officials must accomplish some improvements before the city of Roswell will allow us to reopen. We have been working on getting the logistics so that we can do just that.”
In January, 2024, the track posted an update stating they were waiting to release a 2024 schedule until their updates on the track grounds were approved.
“Until the City of Roswell approves our Concrete Design, we finish getting the funds together for concrete, lay the concrete and get the City of Roswell to sign off we can not post a schedule.”
On February 14, the track released a 19-date schedule for their entire 2024 season, starting with racing on April 6 (practice in March) and ending October 19. However, a Facebook post by the track staff indicated things were not completely going as planned.
“We just barely got the approval of the plans from the city,” stated the post. “We also have been trying to get funds together. This is a $10,000 project. We still haven’t received all of the original donations that people promised to us back in November. So we are in the process of getting the crew together so that we can get the concrete laid. I will let you know about practice on the 9th.”
A few days later the track stated practice for that weekend was canceled due to a “set back with the concrete crew and the recent weather.” A few weeks later the next practice was postponed “due to unforeseen circumstances. We are still lacking funds for handicap parking.”
In March, a local news report stated the city of Roswell adopted new noise ordinance rules, which could affect racing at the track. However, the track made no mention of the rules impeding their progress to reopen, just construction based on making the track ADA compliant.
On April 1, the track released what has become their final communication to the public regarding the status of the track and cancelation of the first race of the season.
“Heres the truth of the matter we are still trying to come up with the funds for Concrete. Steve had some personal business matters come up and he had to handle those, he is currently selling off some assets so he can come up with the money to complete the concrete.
SO as of now this weekends race is cancelled.”
Other than a shared post at the beginning of May for a racing brands product company, the track’s social media has gone silent. The website for Alien Motor Speedway has stripped the schedule from it listing “No events are currently scheduled. Please check back later.”
Legends Nation attempted multiple times to contact the track through social and email communications, however, no responses were received. The phone number listed on social media and the website to contact the track no longer works.
Aydan Saunders won the last Legends race held there on September 9, 2023.
If any updates occur, Legends Nation will post.
