Late Race Pass Sets Up Win for McKenzie; Moon Claims Third SSO Win of the Season

Charlotte Motor Speedway - Summer Shootout Series - Round 6 Recap 2024

From INEX Communications Staff –

“It ain’t over till it’s over” was the theme of the night for Tuesday’s Round 6 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout, with battles for the lead coming down to closing laps in multiple divisions at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division had action from start to finish. Michael Crafton took control of the race from pole position, with everything kicking off behind him. Isaac Kitzmiller would make quick work from this third place starting spot and quickly jump into second position. AFCO Fastest Qualifier Brody Gunter showed his speed early, going from fifth to third, passing Aiden McConnaughey and London McKenzie, who started second and fourth respectively. Around the halfway point, two battles had formed at the front of the field. Lap 12 and 13 saw McKenzie and Gunter go back-and-forth for third, while Crafton and Kitzmiller battled and pulled away at the front. Lap 16 finally saw Kitzmiller get underneath Crafton, but before he could complete the pass a caution had come out for a spin in the midfield.

The restart on Lap 16 had Kitzmiller and McKenzie duking it out for second. Kitzmiller slipped in Turn 2, allowing for McKenzie to clear him off the corner. Kitzmiller took a lap to gather it back up, and the pair would take turns moving each other out of the way for position in the following laps, allowing Crafton to start to get away before another caution came out on Lap 21. Gunter would be the first car to take the outside line on the next restart from fourth, and a delayed reaction from McKenzie allowed for Gunter to slide into second at the start/finish line. Heading into Turn 1, Gunter got to the bumper of Crafton knocking him up the track, but Gunter also slipped on the exit, where McKenzie capitalized. McKenzie would turn his car underneath the two, and made a three-wide pass for the lead heading into Turn 3. McKenzie would go on to survive one more restart and take home the trophy.

The Bojangles Outlaws Division put on a show with TJ Moon starting from pole position and Owen Zacharias starting to his outside. Moon and Zacharias had a competitive battle to start the race, with Zacharias managing to hang on Moon’s outside for the first. Lap 4 finally saw a Moon take command of the race as he gave Zacharias the door off Turn 2 that sent him tumbling down the order. Moon would begin to lead a three-car breakaway before a couple of cautions halted his progress.

The ensuing restart allowed for Hunter Morgan to slot into third position after being the first car to choose the outside lane from sixth position. Colt Johnson who restarted third and moved into second would give Moon a run for his money for a few laps after the restart, but he didn’t quite have the legs to keep up with Moon’s pace. Moon would end up stretching his advantage to a little over a second and claim his third Summer Shootout victory this season.

Familiar faces, Max Reaves and Keelan Harvick, started on the front row of the Night Owl Companies Young Lions Division. Reaves took an early command on the race as Harvick had a tough early battle with Neal Dulin before relinquishing second. A single car spin on Lap 7 would bring the field back together, allowing for Harvick to retake second on the following restart. Another incident a couple of laps later would bring the field together for the last time. The restart would see a rare slip from Reaves, allowing Harvick to take the lead as Reaves had to shove his way back into line at the expense of Dulin. Harvick would lead the rest of the way, surviving a huge send from Reaves going into the final corner of the race.

Jack Smith started on pole of a chaotic Bandits feature race with multiple cautions resetting the field in the early running. On a Lap 4 restart, Smith and outside row leader Camden Truett tangled into Turn 1, sending both drivers off into the outside grass and taking Brexton Busch along for the ride. Wyatt Coffey was the first car to sneak by the wreck cleanly, and he would go on to lead the rest of the race and take home another victory, with Smith making a recovery to fourth.

The UNC Charlotte Pro Division had the longest green flag run of the night with the first 23 laps of the race going green. Jensen Jorgenson and Alex McCollum broke away from the field early, with Jake Bollman struggling to make up positions after battling his way back to his sixth place starting spot after going the wrong direction in the opening laps. A late single car spin would set up a chaos-filled Lap 24 restart. Jorgensen would slip up the track on the restart, allowing McCollum and Daniel Wilk to slip by on the inside. On the final lap, McCollum locked the brakes going into Turn 1, allowing Wilk slip by, leading only one lap but the most important lap to capture the Round 6 victory.

Robby Faggart wasted little time taking the lead from Lee Jordan in the Old Armor Beer Company Masters Division feature, clearing Jordan for the lead on Lap 3 after starting second. A restart shortly after had Kevin Rollins getting around Jordan for second, with Faggart and Rollins breaking away from the field just a few laps later. One final caution on Lap 18 would bring the field back together, but the battle was still between Faggart and Rollins. On the last lap of the race, Rollins would use the bumper and move Faggart out of the way to get back to victory and sweep the double header in the Masters division this week.

The Chargers division saw a clean opening ten laps of action, with Kaden Bradshaw leading in the early goings with Diego Espinosa and Benjamin Rogers in hot pursuit. A couple of single car spins lead to a dreadful restart for Bradshaw and Espinosa, as the two would tangle going for the lead, sending them both to the back and moving Rogers to the lead. Rogers would go on to win, fending off a quick Alex Pate.

Lucas McFall had complete control over the Night Owl Companies Beginner Bandolero A Feature, leading all fifteen laps of the race, and Charlie Evans would take back-to-back B Feature victories.

Action at America’s Home for Racing continues with Round 7 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout on Tuesday, July 9 beginning at 5pm ET/2pm PT on FloRacing with the Charlotte Motor Speedway grandstands opening at 5pm.
