From INEX Communications Staff –
Mother Nature attempted to throw a wrench at the Cook Out Summer Shootout, but Rounds 8 and 9 were successfully completed at Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Five drivers swept their divisions races and the results of these two rounds set up close battles for the championship round on Tuesday, July 30.
ROUND 8
Despite the bright sun beating down on them, the Night Owl Beginner Bandoleros A main drivers showed off mature skills for their age. The race started out with multiple three wide combinations throughout the first two laps. Penelope Carlisle was able to hold her own and come out of the three-wide battle on top. While Carlisle led for a while with McFall closely behind her, McFall did not give up. McFall passed Carlisle with only a few laps left getting his third win of the season.
The Night Owl Young Lions division was full of chaos in the middle and back of the pack. Round 8 was not the round for Neal Dulin.
Dulin started out strong at the front of the pack, but in an attempt to pass the race leader Keelan Harvick, Dulin was bumped from behind by Nathan Lyons, sending him spinning. After a quick trip to the work area, Dulin rejoined the race at the back alongside Lyons.
Straight out of the restart, Dulin bumped Lyons, knocking him off the track and into the grass. Race officials sent both to the rear for being a part of the following caution.
Just when Dulin seemed to be in the clear, he was involved in another collision, this time with Dillon Thomas. On the restart, Max Reaves began making his passing attempts towards the front of the pack. Reaves quickly passed Ryan Zima for 3rd before setting off towards Rodney Dowless Jr.
Despite Reaves’ best attempts, Dowless was able to fend him off and keep his second-place spot. While all this chaos was happening behind him, Keelan Harvick stayed in the front. Harvick, who stayed in first place throughout the entirety of the race had no troubles pulling away from the pack and keeping a strong lead. This was Harvick’s third win at the 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout.
The Chargers division started off rough and never really got much better. The race started off with tons of cautions right off the bat. After a couple of restarts, a wreck between Rhylee Hutchins and Allee Johnson sent Johnson packing. The race for first stayed between Diego Espinosa and Kaden Bradshaw. While Espinosa took the lead following all of the restarts, Bradshaw stayed close behind. Bradshaw was able to make the pass with only a few laps to go and capture his first win of the season.
The VP Racing Semi-Pro division was by far the longest of the day. The race started off with a side by side battle between Hunter Jordan and Michael Crafton before Crafton took the lead and London McKenzie made his pass on Jordan as well.
One pass wasn’t enough for McKenzie as he quickly made a pass on Crafton as well. Thanks to McKenzie’s pass, Brody Gunter was also able to make his way right on past Crafton. After McKenzie and Gunter made their way up to first and second, the remainder of the race was all them.
Just as McKenzie and Gunter had begun to make their way apart from the rest of the pack with only 12 laps complete, the rain started to come down. Thanks to the rain, the Semi-Pros were directed off of the track and into the tech bay.
After this quick little rain was over, it looked like we were going to be able to get things started again. But, that was not the case. A storm rolled through and a severe weather delay was placed on the race. An hour and a half later after the storm had stopped and the track was dried, the Semi-Pros were finally able to resume their race.
The weather delay had nothing on McKenzie as he came out on the track just as fast as he was before he left it. McKenzie and Gunter made their break away once again, and after a few pass attempts by Gunter, McKenzie was able to break away from him as well. McKenzie maintained his strong lead throughout the remainder of the race and got his second win of the season.
Luck still couldn’t be struck by Jack Smith in the Bandits Division. Just when it looked like Smith may have the race won, Wyatt Coffey did what he does best and gained more speed as laps clicked away. Coffey moved right on past Smith and never looked back from there. Coffey got another win to add to his already long list.
The Night Owl Beginner Bandolero B Feature was quite a comeback story for one driver in particular, Maverick Bradshaw. While chaos ensued in front of him, Bradshaw was able to make his way from 13th all the way to the front of the race. After making his way to the front, Bradshaw had no issues maintaining his lead and getting the win.
In the UNC Charlotte Pro Division, Jake Bollman has been the guy to beat. After starting off in second and giving some of the other drivers a chance, Bollman was able to pull away from the pack with 11 laps to go and it appeared that he had this win in the bag. But, on a restart, Bollman got bumped back to 2nd and that’s when things went downhill fast. Bollman was sent flying into the wall, losing his front end and a tire. Thanks to the impact his car took, Bollman was unable to stop his car so he just went rolling straight off the track and it looked like he would never stop, and didn’t until well into turn one of the CMS big Oval.
On the final turn of the final lap, it was three-wide for the second-place spot. This three-wide battle resulted in Jensen Jorgenson spinning off the track, while Bubba Wallace sped on up to finish second right behind Daniel Wilk who got his second win of the series.
Carson Cauble started off going side by side with Bryson Nichols in the Bojangles Outlaws Division. Nichols quickly took the lead and Cauble struggled, falling all the way back to eighth. As Nichols took the lead, Owen Zacharias and TJ Moon stayed closely behind. Zacharias made a pass attempt going side by side with Nichols, after a quick back and forth Zacharias was able to take the lead, bringing Moon along with him. In a failed attempt to fend off Moon, Zacharias fell back to second. After getting the first-place spot, Moon had no trouble getting himself another win.
To finish off round 8 of the CookOut SSO the Masters took to the track. Despite a couple of rough restarts, Scott Moseley was able to keep his lead. It was Moseley’s first trip to America’s Home for Racing this summer, after racing a few rounds at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder, proving he is one to beat at any quarter-mile.
ROUND 9
Qualifying was canceled for Round 9 as the weather moved closer to the racetrack, setting the fields by points and fastest laps from the previous races in the case of the Chargers and Beginner Bandolero Divisions.
Diego Espinosa led the field to the green in the Chargers Division followed shortly a single car spin by Alison Johnson, who had briefly made it into a podium position before bringing out the first caution of the race. The ensuing restart would see Katie Yonchuk, who had started second and lost the position to Kaden Bradshaw on the initial start, lose two more positions to Addyson King and Jhett Johnson respectively before settling into fifth. Another single car spin, this time by Zack McMurry would bring out the second caution of the feature.
The restart that followed on Lap 8 would we Kaden Bradshaw time it perfectly, as he kept close to leader Espinosa off the jump and would be able to sneak up the inside into turn one. King was able to keep touch with the two leaders and was able to capitalize on Espinosa being in the second groove which allowed her to slip into third. Espinosa would keep slipping back all the way to fifth, unable to find a hole before one final caution would bring the field back together. The last restart saw King and Bradshaw be able to both battle and breakaway from the field, with Bradshaw able to hold onto the win.
A five-car battle for the win gave fans a nail biter in the Old Armor Brewing Company Masters Division. Adam Welch jumped out to an early one-second advantage after starting from pole, but was quickly spoiled by a quick Robby Faggart. Faggart managed to erase Welch’s lead by Lap 9 and remained all over his bumper for multiple laps. Lap 13 saw Faggart finally get to the inside of Welch with a bump and run, but Welch held tough. Welch managed to hang tight on Faggart’s door off the next two corners and clear off of turn two with twelve laps remaining.
While Faggart and Welch squabbled, Lee Jordan, Carl Cormier, and Scott Moseley all managed to close up to the leaders, giving us five cars under a blanket with just eight laps to go. While Moseley went to work on Jordan and Cormier, Faggart continued to remind Welch of his presence, giving him a bump on almost every corner entry. Moseley getting around both Cormier and Jordan gave Faggart just enough space to make his move for the win. In the last corner on the final lap, Faggart gave Welch a just enough of a nudge mid-corner to send Welch dirt-tracking off turn 4, allowing Faggart to sneak underneath and take home the victory.
Camden Truett, Jack Smith, and Wyatt Coffey ran the show in the Bandits Division. Truett started on pole but Coffey quickly made his way to the lead. By lap 10, the trio had generated a three second advantage over the chasing pack before Smith self-spun while trying keep touch with Coffey. The race would get back going on lap 11 and would go all the way to finish with Smith making an excellent recovery from the back to third, with Coffey taking his seventh Shootout win this season with Truett in tow.
Bojangles Outlaws pole position starter Owen Zacharias became victim of an early restart on Lap 2 of his feature. A bobble on the restart allowed TJ Moon and Colt Johnson to slip through into first and second, while Zacharias would continue to battle with Cole Gudmestad and Bryson Nichols over third. A mid-race caution would rerack the field, but it wasn’t enough for anyone to stop TJ Moon from taking his 20th INEX points win on the season as he chases both the Summer Shootout and national titles.
Short runs were the name of the game in Night Owl Young Lions Division. Keelan Harvick started on pole of the feature and lead through the opening twelve laps that saw five cautions take place, one of which saw points leader Max Reeves with a mechanical problem as the field stacked up behind him, leaving Carter McMurray nowhere to go, ending his night. Neal Dulin would use the lap 12 restart to his advantage, giving Harvick the bump and run before he could pull away, which allowed him to take the lead. A final yellow on lap 23 would give Harvick and Dulin one more chance to at it, with the two exchanging blows before Dulin would sneak out the victory.
London McKenzie was untouchable in the VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division feature. By the end of the second lap, McKenzie had already managed to stretch his lead out to a second as cars battled behind him. A quick caution on Lap 5 provided the only break in the race. McKenzie took off the on the restart and never looked back. He would go on to win the race by an entire straightaway, while Isaac Kitzmiller and Brody Gunter battled all the way to the checkered for second and third.
The UNC Charlotte Pro Division saw a three-car breakaway battle from start to finish. Daniel Wilk led the field to the green with Jensen Jorgenson and Jake Bollman hot on his tail. While the trio could never separate more than a few tenths, the managed to break out to a two second advantage over fourth by the time they hit ten laps to go. Bollman turned the wick up with seven to go, using the bumper to clear Jorgenson for second. Bollman would give it his all to try and get to the back bumper of Wilk, but just didn’t have enough time, allowing Wilk to hold onto the win.
The Night Owl Beginner Bandolero features provided clean, competitive racing that led off the night. Jackson Jones provided a fresh face in victory lane as he captured his first ever victory in the B Feature, and Lucas McFall had quite a familiar weekend, leading from flag to flag to win the A Feature.
Four championship battles are close with one round remaining. Lee Jordan holds a five and 14 point advantage over Adam Welch and Robby Faggart, respectively, in the Masters Division. Jake Bollman has saw his points lead shrink after Tuesday, and now only has a 19-point advantage over Daniel Wilk. The VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division has 22 points separating leader Michael Crafton and second-place London McKenzie. But the closest championship battle is in the Young Lions Division, as only six points separate points leader Max Reaves and third-place Neal Dulin, with Keelan Harvick sandwiched in between. Full championship points can be viewed HERE.
The final round of the 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway will begin next Tuesday, July 30th with gates opening and coverage beginning on FloRacing at 5pm ET.
