Brands Hatch Indy Circuit welcomes the pocket rockets of the Legends Cars Championship and Legends Cars Elite Cup this coming weekend, 7th/8th June, for one of the most popular annual events on the calendar – the always sensational American Speedfest.
Following an eight week break between the first two events of the season, the turnaround between the visit to Oulton Park International Circuit in Cheshire over Spring Bank Holiday weekend and the upcoming trip to Kent has been a rapid one in terms of preparation for the teams and drivers.
As well as marking the fifth and sixth rounds of the Legends Cars Championship, the Brands Hatch races will also form rounds three and four of the Elite Cup – a series which is contested as part of the main season at the three biggest events. Beginning at Oulton Park little more than a week ago, the Elite Cup continues this weekend at Brands Hatch and will conclude at Croft in August with the BTCC.
Two fantastic race wins at Oulton on Bank Holiday Monday enabled young hot-shot Oli Schlup (Cuckfield) to take the early points lead in the Elite Cup battle, as well as moving ahead of Tyler Read (Weedon) in the outright Championship as well.
Going into this weekend’s action at American Speedfest, only 60 points separate those two in the overall Championship and they have put some clear air already to the chasing pack – headed by former Elite Cup Champion Connor Mills (Upminster).
There is little to choose between Mills and reigning, and two-time, Legends Cars Champion Will Gibson (Farnborough) with only 40 points the difference in the outright Championship. Jack Parker (Wolverhampton), the reigning Elite Cup Champion, is fifth in the standings while Jamie Moylan (Naas) completes the top six.
Stephen Treherne (Islington), who won the Legends crown all the way back in 2011 before taking a lengthy sojourn from racing, is seventh in the overall standings and leads the Masters class by a healthy margin of 335 points from last year’s overall Masters title winner Nick Bridgeman (Baldock) who sits just outside the outright top 10.
Chris Needham (Altrincham), Marcus Pett (Boston) and Andy Bird (Calne) complete the top 10 ahead of Bridgeman, while the lead contender in the Rookie class battle is Owen Lawlor (Dublin) who has dominated thus far in 2025.
In terms of race wins, Read has the most from the opening 12 races of the season with three victories while Schlup, Gibson and Treherne all have two apiece. Mills, Moylan and Needham have each claimed one win and are undoubtedly capable of many more as the campaign continues.
The top three in the Elite Cup standings is Schlup from Gibson and Read, and the second event of the championship within a championship is going to be pivotal in determining the destiny of this year’s prestigious title. Absolutely anything can happen in Legends Cars racing, especially on a short track like the 1.2-mile Indy Circuit, so this weekend’s action really should be breathtaking.
As always, the weekend features three races each day beginning with two Heats and ending with a slightly longer Final. The grid for Heat One each day is determined by ballot draw, not qualifying times, and the starting order for Heat Two is the reverse of Heat One. The grid for each day’s Final is then determined by points accrued during the Heats – albeit with the highest scorers at the back.
This year’s American Speedfest is the 12th instalment of the festival for all things Americana, with huge entertainment on and off track. Along with the Legends Cars will be the V8 behemoths of the EuroNASCAR series, Bernie’s V8s, SpeedFest Silhouettes and the Pickup Truck Championship.
Phil Cooper – Legends Cars Championship Owner:
“American Speedfest is an absolutely incredible event every year and we’re proud to again be part of such a popular and spectacular race meeting, celebrating all things USA. Brands Hatch, of course, is the home of Legends Cars racing in the UK so we’re always very happy to be back there, and the Indy Circuit is perfect for the style of short, sharp, action-packed racing we deliver.
“So far this season we have enjoyed 12 incredible races, Oulton Park a couple of weeks ago was outstanding and coming into American Speedfest we have a new Championship leader, and leader of the Elite Cup, in Oli Schlup. With seven winners so far this year, it’s going to be interesting to see if any other names can be added to that list. We don’t have long left to find out.”
Qualifying at Brands Hatch is scheduled to start at 10.50 on Saturday, 7th June, with Heat One of the day following at 12.35, Heat Two at 15.00 and the Final at 18.05. On Sunday, 8th June, Heat One is timetabled to begin at 10.55, Heat Two at 14.45 and the Final at 17.50.
