Shangri-La II Speedway Reopening; Legends Possible, But There is a Catch

Shangri-La II Speedway Possible Legends

Shangri-La II Speedway, a half-mile concrete oval track located in Tioga Center, New York, is coming back to life in 2025 after being silent for 10 years. And while the race dates listed for 2025 do not include Legend Cars, it is possible they might return to the track.

Opening in 2009, “The Concrete Castle,” which is less than five miles from the original Shangri-La Speedway, had multiple classes that raced throughout the years, including Legends, until it shut down in 2015. In 2010, Legends Nation headed to New York to report on the racing action on October 24. That feature was won by Mike Alcaro (full video can be seen here).

This past weekend, Legends Nation reached out to Jason Makarewicz, Promoter of the track, to see if Legends would eventually be added back to their schedule.

“We would have to test to see how the track would be for them,” said Makarewicz. “Hoping next week to get there with the concrete company to see what needs to be repaired and start from there.”

Soon after, LN contacted Alcaro, who dominated the racing action over the few years Legends raced there, to see if he would be interested in returning.

“I would definitely be down to go back there again,” explained Alcaro. “I loved that place. It’s like Daytona for Legend Cars.”

It has been a while since INEX Racing Series has sanctioned races at larger tracks like Shangri-La II Speedway, and at this point, it doesn’t appear it will happen.

“For the safety of our competitors, it is the current INEX Racing Series policy to not sanction oval tracks over four-tenths of a mile in length,” said Josh Roller, Communications Manager at INEX.

That means if Legend Cars end up making a return to Shangri-La II Speedway in the future, the racing would have to be non-INEX sanctioned. It is unclear at this time if the track, or drivers, would support this. What do you think? Should Legends race once again at Shangri-La II Speedway? Sound off on our Facebook page by clicking here.
