From INEX Communications Staff –
Round 3 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout was another action-packed night of racing at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Quarter-Mile, while celebrating track mascot Lug Nut’s birthday with his mascot friends and go-kart racing!
The Bandits Division started off with a quick yellow that saw front-runner Camden Truett enter the work area for repairs after early contact which sent him to the rear. The 15-lap run after the restart on Lap 2 saw Jack Smith and Wyatt Coffey running one-two, respectively, quickly forming a small breakaway from the chasing pack. Truett wasted little time regaining positions, seeing himself up into the fifth position by Lap 9.
By Lap 15 Truett worked his way around Brexton Busch to position himself into the fourth spot while the front two runners of Smith and Coffey had formed a 2.5 second gap over chasing third place. Lap traffic almost played a factor at the beginning of the run as Coffey had just completed a pass for the race lead, but a late-race caution reset the field to the running order of the previous lap.
The restart on Lap 17 made for an intense battle between Smith and Coffey. Going for the win, Coffey made a move down the inside of Smith in turns 3 & 4, and Smith’s attempt to cover results in both cars spinning around, allowing Truett to take the lead. The one-lap dash restart on Lap 20 saw Busch and Taegan Knowland scrap it out for 2nd, which allowed Truett to cruise to his first-ever Summer Shootout victory.
The NightOwl Young Lions was action-filled from start-to-finish. Keelan Harvick started on pole after a top three invert, but it didn’t take long for the AFCO Fastest Qualifier Max Reaves to get back to the lead. Reaves overtook Harvick on Lap 5 of the 25-lap feature, getting Harvick slightly out-of-shape, and helped allow Ryan Zima to slip into second.
A brief caution period on Lap 8 saw Reaves take control and start to eke out a small advantage over the pack behind. The run would see Harvick reclaim the second spot after a back-and-forth, hard-fought battle with Zima. Harvick faced an incredibly difficult challenge of running down Reaves, but was saved by a late-race caution. Coming to the choose before the restart on Lap 23, Harvick elected to start from second on the inside lane rather than leading the top side, knowing it was going to be his best shot to compete with Reaves and not lose positions trying to find a spot in line.
During the restart, Harvick saw his opportunity and moved Reaves going into turn 1 which put him back in the lead for the first time since Lap 5, but another quick yellow the following lap would mean that Harvick was not home free. On the final restart of the race, Harvick managed to build a small lead, and was able to survive the last corner bump-and-run attempt from Reaves, giving him his first win in the Summer Shootout.
TJ Moon was in control of the Bojangles Outlaw Division race the whole way. Benefiting from a top 5 invert, Moon started 2nd and made quick work of a slip from Bryson Nichols who started on pole. A Lap 5 caution brought the field back together briefly but was no worry to Moon, who never looked back and lead every lap of the race en route to victory.
The VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division saw another flag-to-flag victory on the night, this time from Michael Crafton. Crafton was another benefactor of the pole after the random invert, which allowed him to maintain control through several restarts and short runs throughout the race. Hunter Jordan gave him a challenge towards the end being the only two cars in the lead breakaway, but didn’t have enough to take the top spot from Crafton, who is now is now three-for-three in the Semi-Pro division.
Jake Bollman is growing familiar with Charlotte Motor Speedway victory lane himself, as he captured his third Pro Division win in three races. Setting the quick time in qualifying, Bollman quickly overcame the two-car invert, reclaiming the lead from Alex McCollum. A couple incidents brought the field back together early but after the final restart on Lap 8, Bollmann all but disappeared out of the windshields of his competitors, claiming victory by half a straightaway.
The night was capped off by another competitive Masters Division race. Robby Faggart led from flag-to-flag, but was kept honest by Round 1 winner Dwayne Holder. Holder never let Faggart out of his sights, but just didn’t quite have the final drive to get to the lead after slowly reeling in his opponent.
The Charger Division began with a red flag on Lap 1 and another caution quickly following on Lap 2, which saw five cars eliminated early. The restart following on Lap 3 saw Kaden Bradshaw and Benjamin Rogers battling fiercely for the lead. Lap 6 saw Rogers finally clear Bradshaw, with the time flag being displayed just a lap later, meaning the next flag, caution or checkers, would end the race. A single car spin on Lap 9 brought out the caution, giving Rogers his first Summer Shootout Victory.
The Night Owl Beginner Bandolero A-Feature did not fail to excite. A chaos filled race with action all throughout the field featured three different race leaders within the first four laps of the race before the first caution could fly. The 15-lap feature was capped off with one of the closest finishes in Summer Shootout history, with Corbin Cannon beating out Will Wilke by just 0.011 seconds.
Mechanical problems saw Night Owl Beginner Bandoleros driver Lucas McFall starting from the tail of the class’s B-Feature race to kick-off the night. McFall didn’t shy away from the challenge, working his way through the field to make the race winning pass with 3 laps to go.
The 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout continues next Tuesday, June 25th, with coverage beginning at 5:00pm ET on FloRacing with gates at Charlotte Motor Speedway opening at 5pm ET.
